Police & Fire Commission receives Q1 Fire and Police updates; discusses controlled-substance policy and narcotic tracking
At the April 27, 2026 Police & Fire Commission meeting held in Council Chambers, members approved the March 23, 2026 minutes and heard quarterly operations updates from Fire and Police leadership. Fire Department items included licensing-year preparations, recognition of a Firefighter/Paramedic completing the Indiana Smoke Diver Course, and five implemented changes to controlled-substance handling (reduced on-ambulance quantities, redesigned stocking/restocking, reinforced documentation, increased Medical Director oversight, and new tracking technology). EMS presented narcotic storage box technology and unique access-code procedures. The Commission discussed receipt of the full DCI investigative report concerning the former EMS Division Chief and HR read an internal-investigation summary into the record. Police Department items included notification that Bridge Street Mission has reopened (allowing WMC Shelter to close), increased large drug-seizure activity handled by the Community Resource Unit, evidence/chain-of-custody protocols, and updates on use-of-force training. The meeting adjourned at 8:39 AM; a possible rescheduling of the May 18 meeting to May 11 was proposed.
